What are the effects of lymphatic drainage?

Lymphatic drainage is recommended for those who suffer from swelling, heavy legs, or want to detoxify the body. It is advised after aesthetic treatments to promote faster healing and regeneration. It is also ideal for athletes looking to improve recovery after training.

How does the lymphatic system work?

The lymphatic system is like a network of small “tubes” and filtering stations in our body. It transports a fluid called lymph, which contains proteins, fats, and immune system cells. Lymph helps remove waste, bacteria, and excess fluids from tissues. When this system works properly, excess fluid is returned to the bloodstream. If it is slow or blocked, fluids accumulate in the tissues, causing swelling called lymphedema. Manual lymphatic drainage is designed to stimulate this flow, helping the body naturally drain excess fluids.

Why does each session begin with relaxation of the front of the neck?

The reason we start with the front of the neck is very important: this area contains the main lymphatic ducts that collect lymph from the entire body and return it to the bloodstream. By stimulating these “central” areas first, we open a sort of “main drainage route.” Then, when we work on the legs and knees, the lymph already has a clear path toward the trunk and neck, making it easier to reduce swelling. It’s a bit like emptying the main drain pipe before cleaning the smaller pipes: everything works more efficiently.

What should I do after lymphatic drainage?

Drink water within an hour after the treatment to help the body eliminate mobilized toxins and fluids. Avoid intense exertion (heavy gym workouts or lifting) immediately after the session; gentle activities like walking are preferable. Keep your legs elevated for a few minutes at home to further promote drainage. Wear compression stockings (if prescribed) to help maintain the effect.

Tips to prolong the effects of lymphatic drainage

To prolong the benefits of lymphatic drainage, it is important to adopt a few simple daily habits. Drinking enough water helps eliminate toxins and supports fluid drainage. Following a balanced diet, favoring fruits and vegetables while reducing salt intake, supports the lymphatic system’s function. Light movement, such as walking, stretching, or practicing yoga, improves lymph circulation. Finally, regular treatments or complementary massages help maintain a feeling of lightness and well-being. By following these simple tips, the effects of lymphatic drainage will last longer and contribute to overall body wellness.
