Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that primarily affects women. It is characterized by a symmetrical and bilateral accumulation of subcutaneous fat under the skin.

While subcutaneous fat is present in everyone, in people with lipoedema it becomes inflamed, painful, and can harden and increase in volume over time. The affected areas often develop hard, painful nodules, ranging in size from a grain of rice to a walnut, sometimes even larger. Lipoedema most commonly affects the lower body, while the feet generally remain normal in size during the early stages.

The onset of lipoedema appears to be linked to hormonal changes, such as those occurring during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. During these periods, women may be particularly sensitive to body perception, and managing lipoedema can significantly impact emotional well-being.

Lipoedema is a progressive disease that can worsen if left untreated. Early intervention is important, as treatment is most effective in the initial stages.

What is the Difference Between Lipoedema and Obesity?

Lipoedema differs from obesity, although it is possible to have both conditions simultaneously. Lipoedema is characterized by painful and inflamed subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), whereas obesity also involves deep fat layers that are neither inflamed nor painful.

Obesity typically presents with a widespread distribution of fat throughout the body and can be classified into two main types:

  • Gynoid – pear-shaped, with greater fat accumulation in the lower body.

  • Android – apple-shaped, with fat mainly accumulating in the abdominal area.

Since lipoedema most often affects the lower body, it can be easily mistaken for gynoid obesity.

When lipoedema and obesity occur together, obesity can worsen the lipoedema, making it important to address both conditions. While caloric restriction usually leads to weight loss in obesity, it is not effective for lipoedema. This can be frustrating, as women with lipoedema may lose weight and reduce fat in the upper body, but the lower body often remains largely unchanged.

In recent years, specialized dietary programs have been developed to help people with lipoedema improve their condition and relieve symptoms.
